Ass Burger - Blog

The Assburger is a very interesting memoir written by Augusten Burroughs. In this memoir, Augusten talk about his super smart brother John "The summer my big brother, John, turned fifteen, he read the Encyclopedia Britannica from A to Z." Augusten was always pressured by his brother John to do the stuff he did and like the stuff he liked. John would leave volumes of Encyclopedia Britannica so his brother who was in grade 3 (Augusten) would read them like he did. It wasn't really Augusten's cup of tea. "His mouth opened in disgust. He simply could not comprehend this. "You didn't read any of them?" I don't think I can relate to Augusten necessarily. I do not have any older siblings and my cousins were always supportive and encouraging. I think their is some very good diction in this memoir in regards to the title Assburger and the actual Asperger syndrome. When his brother John told him he had Asberger syndrom Augusten thought it sounded like Ass-burger. " He tells me the name again and spells it (because I thought it was Ass-burger)". I also enjoy the part where Augusten is called and introduced as Bortderline Retarded by his brother John as kids because of the little interest Augusten showed for what his brother liked and do what John did. I liked hos Augusten then stated that he thought John was the one retarded. "Either that, or a Genious". I found it interesting how Augusten put those to words describing one person because they are two totally opposites in most cases.
